How's your love life? Are you
happy or broken hearted? If you answered broken hearted, you
actually may be---literally. New research is saying that bad
relationships can actually affect your heart. Recent studies
are saying that happily married men live 8-10 years longer than
single or divorced men, and happily married women live 3-4 years
longer than single or divorced women. The key word here is
happily! Which means if you are in a happy monogamous
relationship your life expectancy can be lengthened, and if you are
in a bad relationship, you could not only be sacrificing your time
and emotions, but also your health. Behavior
specialists say that unhappy, unhealthy relationships can put a
strain on your heart, start a domino effect of bad stress-induced
behaviors (i.e. overeating, drinking, drug use, unsafe and casual
sex) to try and compensate for the negative emotions being felt
because of the relationships. Psychologists at the University
of Utah found that men who routinely argue with their wives
compromise their heart health. In the Journal of the American
Medical Association it reports that women with heart disease
tripled their risk of recurrent heart trouble if they were involved
in a stressful relationship. Thus, proving that unhealthy
relationships affect your heart in more ways than one.
Protect
your heart and your health by either mending that bad relationship
or getting out. In the end, it's not worth the risk.
Take care of yourself first, if not how can you take care of anyone
else? Be smart. Protect your heart.
