Celebrity Hair Crush: Sanaa Lathan
Probably more than just a hair crush, I think I just have a person crush on Sanaa Lathan. Did you know that she earned a degree in English from Berkeley? How about that she studied drama at Yale? Impressed yet?
Are you aware of who her father is, Stan Lathan, a highly successful television and film producer (Martin, The Steve Harvey Show, Miami Vice, All of Us)? If you don’t know – Google him. Despite having an industry dad, she once worked cleaning someone’s home for extra money (via Black Enterprise)! How can you not love work ethic like that?! Well anyway…onto her hair!
One thing that immediately comes to mind about Sanaa is that she wore her real hair in blockbuster classic film, Love & Basketball. I think that was my original introduction to the twist-out (before the term became widely known) a style I copied regularly!
My stylist would give me flat two strand twists, allow it to set under the hooded dryer and unravel to give me a lasting style of beautiful heat free curls. *Hmm, I need to revisit that look!* Back to Sanaa, not only did she rock her natural tresses in ONE movie but she does it regularly both on television and film roles. For those who’ve seen Something New you may remember her character even dealt with the issue of being secure sans weave as a Black woman.
Over the years she has worn many different styles and like many black women and most actresses, utilized weaves and wigs to accentuate and change her look, protect her hair, and enjoy versatility.
Although she rocks extensions from time to time, I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a celebrity wear their real hair to as many events, premieres and red carpets as Sanaa and it is always stunning!
From the looks of her Instagram photos (and even random candid tabloid shots) she wears her real hair in her own time as well. I also love her apparent friendship with other Black actresses such as Gabrielle Union, Essence Atkins, and Taraji P. Henson. Isn’t it nice to see support rather than competition and hate among black women?
But my favorite look of all are her bun styles – so classy and chic!!!
