Natural Hair Discussion: Is it easier if you start with short hair?
When I first began my healthy hair journey, my hair fell to about neck and chin length. I refrained from relaxing for seven months due to a bad relaxer service (see my hair story for more details) because I was waiting to return to my trusted stylist. However, the longer I stretched my relaxer – the more thought I gave to transitioning. I decided against it for a few reasons, but about a year later revisited the idea of allowing my relaxer to grow out. As I pondered I thought to myself “If I was going to ‘go natural’ why didn’t I do it at the start of my journey when my hair was shorter?!” Now, with my hair only about six inches from my final length goal I know I would be more hesitant to want to undertake the huge task of transitioning with so much more relaxed length to deal with. However, if my hair were shorter, I probably wouldn’t have any problems with big chopping to a teeny-weeny afro (TWA). Perhaps that is just me though, maybe for other women, when you are ready to go natural you are just READY and it doesn’t matter how much length you have to cut off or how long your transition phase will last.
So what do you think, is it easier to go natural if you begin with short hair?
