Last weekend I attended the 2012 World Natural Hair and Beauty Show in Atlanta, GA hosted by the lovely Ms. Taliah Wajiid. I along with Natural hair and fellow BHM blogger Latoya Watson spent a full day speaking with vendors, attendees, and hairstylists. Along with watching hair demos, product shopping, and attending the Color Me Bad fashion show, Latoya and I asked attendees “What’s Your Hair Story?”.
Upon walking into the venue a bright and towering walkway boasting beautiful and bright fall colors, World Natural Hair Show signage, and a gorgeous picture of Taliah Wajiid greeted me. The entrance clamored with attendees as the day went on. I was delighted to see an array of beautiful natural hairstyles. There were sister locs, twistouts, and the infamous fro with different colors, textures, and lengths. And don’t be fooled into thinking this is a one pony show. Relaxed women represented too!
I was excited to learn about all the new and long-standing products on the market. Having been natural my entire life I understand the time, energy, and money that goes into maintaining a natural style. Large and small vendors poured in with every oil, wax, shampoo, clay, and hair milk you can think of. Looking for natural hair products? This was the place to find it! I even learned a thing or two from Latoya whose tastefully done twistout caught the eye of every bystander as we walked by. She introduced me to hair clay and other products that in all my twenty-six years of living I hadn’t quite tried yet.
And the day wouldn’t have been complete without interviewing Ms. Taliah Wajiid herself. Her natural hair care and business savvy were inspiring. After all she is the brain behind the World Natural Hair and Beauty Show that brings throngs of people to the Georgia International Convention Center every year. I too asked her “What’s Your Hair Story?”. But don’t look for any clues here! You’ll have to watch the full interview on BHM.tv to find out.
In addition to the already plentiful hair products were jewelry, music, and fashions to buy. I almost lost my mind shopping at all the wonderful and affordable jewelry booths. Whether relaxed or natural, there was something for everyone. And if the day’s experiences weren’t enough, that evening we attended the Color Me Bad fashion show. The designs rocked and the entertainment didn’t disappoint. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
My first experience at last weekend’s World Natural Hair and Beauty show proved to be a success. I met so many wonderful people and loved hearing each and every one of their hair stories. Some were comedic, heartfelt, and even inspiring. Your stories, lives, and journeys all inspire me in my own hair journey and natural hair lifestyle. I most definitely will be attending next year’s show and can’t wait to see what new people, products, and experiences it brings. For those of you who are on the fence about attending, I encourage you to do so! You will see so much and learn so much more. Thank you to BHM for allowing me this opportunity and to Ms. Taliah Wajiid for the inspiration. See you next year!
