100 Strokes a Day for Black Hair… Really?

natural-hair-brushHave you ever heard the old fashion saying, ‘100 strokes a day keeps the hair beautiful and healthy’?   Can this be true for black hair?  Well to most of you more pragmatic women out there, this may sound like a smart gimmick told to a four year old.   While there is some truth to this theory, it’s not the best solution for many of us.   First of all, women over the age of 35 or sometimes even earlier, start losing their hair.   The last thing they need to do is relentlessly stroke it with a brush, so more hair can detach from the roots and fall out.

Logically, this practice will undoubtedly smooth the hair but not quite as well as some of these new mind-blowing hair products on the market today. Simply stroking the hair will not give it long-lasting and augmenting results.   It’s a quick fix for the first hour or so if you’re lucky; you can expect the hair to start frizzing and tangle up in no time.

  • Continuous brushing/stroking combined with gently twisting and wrapping your hair in a bun regularly will help keep it feeling smooth and looking somewhat silky, so keep this practice in mind always.
  • Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners free from harsh chemicals such as ammonium sulfate, sulfur, selenium sulfide, sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, sodium thiosulfate, alkyl sodium sulfate and alkyl benzene sulfonate.   To quickly inform you, stay away from shampoos and conditioners like Suave, Dove, Pert Plus and VO5 to name a few.   Some good choices are Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo, L’Oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss and Sunsilk.
  • After washing your hair, condition twice!   You can feel the difference instantly and see it when the hair dries.
  • Comb through the hair with a wide teeth comb when conditioning and then loosely pin up for a minimum of 5 minutes before rinsing out.   (For even better result cover the hair with a shower cap while it conditions).
  •  Wash the hair with luke warm water and rinse with very cold water.
  • Deep condition your hair once or twice a month also do protein treatments to strengthen your hair.
  • Use natural oils such as olive, jojoba, castor, coconut as well as carrot oil serums as this will help to lock in moisture and leaves your hair looking shiny.
  • Include in your diet lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, whole grains, eggs and poultry.   This will stimulate hair growth, strengthen and make your hair healthy.

There are additional things you can try to nourish your hair and keep it looking beautiful.   Switching up your shampoo and conditioner from time to time with those that contain natural based ingredients is a smart technique that works.   Using silk wraps to tie the hair before going to bed and/or using silk pillowcases is said to prevent the hair from harsh rubbing during sleeping and ultimately aid in better care for your hair.   Also trimming the ends of your hair perhaps on a monthly basis, will keep the ends healthy and from further splitting while creating body and thickness.
