3 Terrible DIY Hair Treatments

Over the course of my hair journey I have made some pretty serious boo boos.  In the search for the perfect product combination, it is safe to say that I have turned over most stones.  So I am going to list out a few of my most disastrous attempts at DYI beauty treatments and why they didn’t work.   Hopefully this will save you from making some of the same mistakes.


Eggs for Protein


You’ll need: 1 yolk of egg and 1 cup milk.   Beat the egg yolk until it’s frothy and add the milk.   You can add 1/ 2 tbsp. of rosewater if you have some.   Apply the mixture generously to the entire hair, concentrating on the ends.   Let the mask penetrate for 10 / 15 minutes and then rinse your hair thoroughly.

The Results:

My first attempt was with a wash-n-go

  • My hair was sticky
  • Residue was very dense (it looked like bits of scrambled eggs)
  • Had to clarify my hair to get it all out.

I’m pretty sure it went badly because the water was too warm.   My second attempt I rinsed with ice-cold water:

  • Hair was firm/stiff
  • Very shiny when dry
  • Very little frizz
  • I flat ironed it a few days latter and the residue came back


Mayonnaise Deep Conditioner:


Take about one cup of mayonnaise and put it in your dry hair.   Massage it through your scalp and then leave it in for 15 minutes before shampooing.   This trick will get you super-soft hair.   (Passport to Beauty by Shalini Vadhera).

The Results:

I tried this in boarding school with a bunch of my mates.   We bargained with the café’s main chef to give us a take-out tray full of mayo.   We tried it as a deep conditioner:

  • This smelt terrible (the stench wafted through the dorm)
  • It was too heavy and oily (probably because we put on too much)
  • It didn’t rinse out well (we used sea breeze to get out the stench)
  • My hair was soft but no significant change
  • None of us (six girls) thought it was worth it


Henna for Straight hair And a Looser Curl Pattern


Mix high quality henna powder in lemon juice.   Let it sit over night or for 4-8 hrs.   Apply to hair in generous amounts, ensuring that the hair is fully covered.

The Results:

I wore my hair straight for years.   Like many others, it was my quest to get my hair as flat as possible.  Well Henna did the trick!   It is regrettable now because it also dropped my curl pattern more then I was expecting it to.   But after 3 henna applications (over the course of 3 months) I flat ironed my hair and it turned out like the fantasy-shampoo-girl-hair I always wanted.   No frizz, it flowed wonderfully, and was humidity resistant.   I’m telling you I looked Chinese.

The down side was that when I washed my hair it was limp and wavy.   It didn’t look bad but it wasn’t the hair I had grown to know and love.   It took about a year and a half for my original pattern to recover.

  • I hated it
  • It was bone straight
  • Flat and limp
  • Henna can be very drying so I deep conditioned often.

In spite of these mishaps, I still continue to experiment and have fun with my hair.  The only difference is that I am no longer trying to change it.   I love my hair the way it is.   I don’t know why it took me so long to accept it, but now all I want is healthy hair.

  1. I like to add a tablespoon of mayo to my store bought deep conditioner. I love the results my hair is so soft and moistured. I’ve never tried mayo by itself.

    • I used 2 tablespoons of mayo, 1 big tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 eggs (just the yolk if your hair is mostly dry ) I mixed it up in a bowl and applied it to my roots first then my ends (which were fried) i left it in for 30- 40 minutes , when I was done I rinsed it out in the shower with just water for 5-10 minutes I then shampoo ed once and conditioned my hair twice , my results were amazing most of my ends were repaired and my.hair was shiny and soft (cinnamon helps premise hair growth by helping circulation of blood flow ) I repeat this 2-3 times a week

  2. About the mayo treatment I’ve heard a lot of bad things from it and slot of good things about it so I’m kinda scared to put it in my hair because some people say the it makes your hair really dry and smelly and others say it gave them sliky curls so I don’t know if should do it

    • Once you do it rinse it out and then apply a moisturizing conditioner than rinse that out, and your hair will be okay

    • You should try it. I used it on my natural And i use it on my permed hair. I let it stay in my hair all night but you can do it for a hour. I WaYou should try it. I used it on my natural Andi use it on my permed hair. I let it stay in my hair all night but you can do it for a hour. Wash it out it your favorite shampoo then condition it. Rinse again. My hair become so shiny and soft. I blow dry it straight. It looks like Texas oil. Lol. Mayo is great!I wash it out it with some Motions shampoo then condition it with motion conditioner. Rinse again. My hair becomes so shiny and soft. I blow dry it straight. It looks like Texas oil. Lol. Mayo is great!

  3. I tried the mayonnaise treatment. Before this, my hair would take FOREVER to dry. I would usually wash my hair every other day, and the next day it would usually be dry at the ends and very oily at the top. I thought that the mayonnaise treatment would help at least a little, so I tried it. It was a bad mistake. My hair is now VERY dry and feels weird. I used to be about a 3B in curls and now it brought it down to about a 3A or 2C. when I get out of the shower, my hair dries TOO quick. Also, my hair still smells like mayonnaise a little bit even though I’ve washed my hair 4 times since I’ve done that treatment. I heard a lot of good reviews about it, and I dont relate to them at ALL. I don’t know how to get my hair back to normal, either. I put conditioner in my hair and it’s still dry. I want my old hair back!

  4. I regurlaly use whole eggs on my hair for protein treatments. I add a teaspoon of glycerin to add moisture and my hair turns out strong and soft. I never have to worry about stiffness.

    Mayo…I’ve tried and do admit that it’s good for moisture, but the smell is too much for me. So I stopped using it.

    As for henna. I am a total hennahead. I love how how strong it makes my hair. It helps for stretching relaxers, as it softens my new growth. I know that, for me, I love that it weighs down my hair.

    Overall, these treatments are just a question of preference.

  5. hey.. i have tried the egg on my hair and it worked like a charm. There is a way to do it… you don’t apply the whole egg on your hair but just the egg white.. and if you want you can add some lemon juice .. and you’ll see how silky and soft your hair will become !! The best natural conditioner.

  6. Hey Natural Sisters!

    I have never tried the eggs or mayonnaise by themselves but when you mix them with olive oil and honey it works as a great deep conditioner. I also only do the deep conditioner after I have used a half and half apple cider vinegar and water mix to strip my hair of any other type of product build-up that may be already in my hair. It results in shiny, soft, and manageable hair.

    Here’s what I do: Mix one egg, three spoon fulls of mayo, and as much or as little olive oil and/or honey as you want. If I need more I just do the mixture again, I prefer to run out than have to much. Waste not, want not:) Saturate your strands and let sit under a shower cap and a towel wrap for about thirty minutes and rinse!

  7. Ha, I already tried the eggs and the mayo (together). The first time all was well however, I noticed that it made my hair so dry and it began to break so here i am now trying to fix what i broke.

  8. I am transitioning to natural and looking for some good tips to keep my hair soft and manageable. While I am transitioning, I usually keep micros or sew-ins. Anyways, tired of the weave and my scalp itches constantly. I read that sulfur is good for the hair cells and scalp. Any ideas how I can use this naturally?

    • Although many people use sulfur, I’ve not heard of any good results coming from it. Most of the time it is to harsh and irritating to the skin. Tea tree oil is very good for itchy scalps, but I’d dilute it w/ almond or grape seed oil.

  9. Try using anita grant products. they are amaaaazing. never tried their henna treatment but if it’s like any of her other stuff, it’s moisturizing as well as strengthening.
