Make Your Hair Color Last Longer!

Coloring your hair is a tedious and harsh process for the hair – not to mention expensive if you have it done professionally, which I recommend.  After achieving the perfect look, the last thing you want is for it to fade away!  Here are a few tips on how to make your hair color last longer.

  • Balance your pH.  Being sure to correct your hair’s porosity (the ability of the hair to soak up moisture) and restore its naturally acidic pH will help the color to adhere much better which will make your hair color last longer.  There are a few commercial products that are used to do this such as Roux Porosity Control, but many ladies also use mixtures of apple cider vinegar and water to achieve the same thing.
  • Use sulfate free shampoos.  Most ladies use sulfate free formulas regardless of whether or not they color their hair simply because they clean a bit too effectively and can leave your hair dry and stripped of its moisture.  Sulfates have the same effect on hair color and can quickly strip the color deposits from the hair shaft leaving you with faded color.
  • Apply a clear rinse or glaze.  Clear rinses seal in the color, which helps to not only make your color last beyond by keeping it vibrant, but they also have a number of other benefits for the hair as well.  The great thing is, clear rinses are relatively cheap and are super easy to apply.
  • Use cool water to wash.  This is the same principle as washing your delicate clothing in cool water, hot water is harsh and can definitely dehydrate your hair and cause your color to fade.  Cool water also helps your cuticles to close giving your hair more luster and a smoother feel as well, and shiny hair always helps hair color look better!

Follow these tips on how to make your hair color last longer and you are sure to have vibrant results for weeks on end!

  1. I have had my hair colored for about 6months now. The best advice is a MOISTURIZING shampoo in my oponion. My color remains vibrant and my shampoo is not sulfate free. But it is moisturizing. Also use heat on your hair less frequently.

  2. Great tips! I’m getting my hair highlighted on the 23rd using the Shea Moisture Hair Color System in Bright Auburn. I will definitely incorporate a few of these tips.
