Review: Optimum Care Salon Collection No-Lye Relaxer

I’ve been relaxing my hair for the better part of fifteen years.  I began with Mizani way back in the day and quickly determined it was much too strong because although it got my hair stick straight, over time my hair began to thin and show signs of damage.  I moved on to other brands including Affirm, Dudley, Motions, Indigo, Perfect Results, and Silk Elements, but have never been married to any particular type.  As long as it got my hair straight while keeping my hair on my head, it was a-okay with me.  I’d never had an “amazing” experience with a relaxer to the point that I had a loyalty to any type or brand.  Until I tried Optimum Care Salon Collection No-Lye Relaxer that is.

I had just decided to begin self-relaxing again, much to my chagrin, and was having an extremely difficult time deciding on which brand to use.  Favorites among popular healthy hair bloggers were Mizani Butter Blends, Organic Root Stimulator, and Phytospecific.  However, I had just discovered the amazing effects ceramides had on my hair and was curious about the Optimum Care line.  I knew it regularly won Best At Home Relaxer in the Essence beauty awards, but I wasn’t sure if that was due to public opinion or clever advertising.  I definitely hadn’t seen much hype about it in the Black Hair Media (or other) hair forums.  I decided to go with my gut after pacing up and down the aisles of my local beauty supply store for about 45 minutes and grabbed a box of the Optimum Care no lye relaxer.

I relaxed my hair that evening using all the components of the kit with the exception of a different scalp protector base.  [pullquote_right]Sidenote:  Is it just me or do relaxer kits give you a ridiculously small amount of base?[/pullquote_right]  After applying the relaxer crème to my new growth, smoothing and allowing it to process for about 20 minutes I rinsed in the shower and immediately whispered to myself “wow” as I felt the smooth softness of my freshly relaxed hair.  It wasn’t just straight; it felt silky to the touch and strong!  It was almost as if I were rinsing conditioner from my hair rather than relaxer!  I was especially impressed because no-lye relaxers are notorious for giving hair a dry feeling due to the mineral deposits left on the strands.  I could not have been more pleased; my hair had processed very straight, something that is difficult to achieve with my 4b texture plus it felt healthy!  What more could I ask for in a relaxer?

I’ve since determined the Optimum Care Salon Collection No-Lye Relaxer to be my staple and have been using it ever since.
