Super Foods for Beautiful Hair and Skin

A brief overview of some organic and healthy foods that will boost your metabolism and hair growth.

Eggs

Hair is mainly made up of protein so a diet rich in protein is important. Eggs contain high quality protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. And according to new research eggs also contain antioxidants thanks to two amino acids they contain called Tryptophan and Tyrosine which have potent antioxidant properties equivalent to half a serving of cranberries. Try to buy organic, free range eggs because the chickens are fed healthier feeds and these eggs contain more nutrients such as omega- 3 fatty acids which are vital for healthy shiny hair and healthy elastic skin. Eggs also contain an abundance of vitamin B12.

Salmon

Wild Salmon is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is rich in Niacin which is vitamin B3. Some side effects of B vitamin deficiency are hair loss, slow hair growth, brittle hair and hair breakage so B vitamins are vital for hair health. If you don’t like the taste of fish take a fish oil supplement daily so you can still get the benefits of it.

Spinach

Spinach is a good source of vitamins B, C, and E, potassium, iron, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin C contributes to the production of collagen, a protein found in connective tissues that strengthen the hair and skin. Trade your iceberg lettuce for spinach, and try it sautéed.

Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate is an antioxidant powerhouse. Just two tablespoons of natural cocoa have more antioxidant capacity than four cups of green tea, and one and a half glasses of red wine. In one study the flavanols in dark chocolate which act as antioxidants improved skin hydration and thickness. When shopping, remember the best kind of chocolate should be at least 60 percent cacao.

Greek Yogurt

Yogurt is rich in protein, calcium, B vitamins, and minerals. Greek yogurt contains more protein per serving than regular yogurt. Greek yogurt that comes in a 6oz container will contain anywhere from 18 to 22g of protein. Like I stated earlier hair is mostly made up of protein so plenty of protein in your diet is important.

Blueberries

This berry was ranked number one in antioxidant activity by the U.S. Department of Agriculture compared to 40 common fruits and veggies. The antioxidants in blueberries help prevent wrinkles and protect the skin from damage caused by stress and sun exposure. Eat them by the handful or sprinkle on top of your greek yogurt.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are packed with Iron, protein and fiber. They also contain most of the B vitamins, folate, and vitamin C. One cup contains 12g of protein and they contain a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Its best to enjoy them raw to get the most nutrients but you can also try them roasted.

Coconut

We all know the benefits of applying coconut oil to our hair and skin. The benefits of eating coconut are endless. Swap out cooking with Crisco and use organic virgin coconut oil instead. Coconut oil is packed with healthy fat of the medium chain fatty acid variety. We need healthy fats in our diet to have shiny hair and skin. You can also try coconut yogurt or coconut water which is very hydrating.
