Natural Bride: Reiko

Tell us about yourself: I’m a teacher by day, style blogger by night, stylist and writer on my off days!

Tell us about your fiance/husband: My hubby is a character.   He works in the oil industry, but he also moonlights as a poet when he gets the urge.   He’s my soundboard for ideas, my best friend, my workout partner and Words With Friend competitor —  although I rarely beat him.

How long have you been together? How did you meet? We just celebrated our two year anniversary in July but we’ve been together approaching 7 years.  We met through my good friend who also worked with Sean at the time.   She insisted that we meet.   I really agreed to meet him finally just to get her off my back about it! HA!

How long have you been natural? Why did you go natural? Goodness, probably a solid 8 or 9 years.  I live in Houston…where humidity ruins good hair styles on a daily basis.  I also got tired of being overbooked every time I went to a salon only to walk out and my curls fall flat.   There is no political statement behind.  Natural hair just suits me.

Did you plan on wearing your hair in its natural state on your wedding day?  It never crossed my mind to wear my hair straight.

Why or why not? What was your wedding day hairstyle? I always see wedding pictures and the bride’s hair always looks like something out of a movie.  I wanted to look the most like myself as possible.  Natural hair, hoop earrings, bangles….yep…that’s me all day, every day.  I wanted my hubby to recognize me!

What was your vision for your wedding day?  I can’t say it was a typical wedding.  We told everyone we got married at the courthouse a week prior to the wedding and sent invites to celebrate with us at a reception.   No one knew that was all a lie.   Not even our parents.   Sean and I walked in the venue, hand in hand and surprised everyone with a quick ceremony. (I am not a courthouse kinda chick.) We decided to do it that way so that we could focus more on the celebration and less on the “hype/price tag” of a traditional ceremony.

How did your hairstyle fit into your vision for the day? It was perfect.  It was big just the way I wanted it.  No veil.  No pincurls or fancy stuff.

Any advice for natural hair brides or brides in general? You are supposed to walk down the aisle looking confident and happy. Not like a stranger to your groom!
