New York. Atlanta. Philly. When you think major hair expos, you normally think of major metropolitan cities, right? Well on Saturday, September 28th, Akira Grenardo-Drummond and Tywanda Howie put Delaware on the map. The Second Annual Naturally ReDefined Expo attracted over 600 attendees to Newark, Delaware. Held on the University of Delaware campus, the event featured over 60 vendors, 9 workshops and 15 performers.
The mission of Naturally ReDefined is to redefine how women of color embrace hair and beauty. Throughout the year, Akira and Tywanda host natural hair events to carry out their mission. Online, you can join their community of over 2,500 women in their popular facebook group, Delaware Naturalistas. There, members share tips on hair care: twistouts, blowouts, moisturizing hair, and more. They also provide a virtual shoulder to lean on when co-workers or even loved ones disapprove of hair choices. The Naturally ReDefined Hair Expo is their premier event where the women behind their keyboard can meet face to face.
At the Naturally ReDefined Expo, attendees were able to fellowship while shopping the many vendors including, Alikay Naturals, Wonder Curl, Bronner Brothers, Nassie’s Hope, Curls Unleashed, Ashley’s Naturals, Reshma Henna, and many more. Nine performers graced the stage with their “verses and flow”. Featured performers included the event’sMC, Stephanie Artist. As an education component, workshop covered topics including: dining for healthy hair, wash-n- go styles, loc creativity, and the media’s impact on good hair. The highlight of the event was Rochelle Graham’s (BlackOnyxx77) featured workshop, “How to Reach Your Hair Goals”. During this workshop, she provided a detailed presentation on how to develop a full regimen for healthy hair growth.
