Nicole S. is a Master Loctician/Educator based in New Castle, DE. At her salon, Get Twysted, she specializes in starter locs, loc extensions, maintenance, and repair. She also does twists, box braids, coil outs, and other natural styles. At the recent Natural Hair Resolutions event, I was able to catch up with her. During our interview, she shared why she left Corporate America to start her own salon — originally named, Just Braids by Nicole.
Latoya: What made you want to start your own natural hair salon?
Nicole: I started it because I went through a period where I was transitioning and I wanted to do this thing that was more natural — that made me feel my best. Natural was the best way for me to go. It just assisted me in my journey. I put a kiddie perm in my daughter’s hair. Ruined it. Ruined the texture. And I was in a job that I hated, so I started doing hair. It was a natural transition to open a salon. I wanted to help others who were going through some of the things that I was going through. So that they would have a place [to go]. I thought, I had already been through it, let me help [them] with transitioning to [their] next level.
Latoya: Originally, your salon was called “Just Braids by Nicole”. Why and how did your salon became “Get Twysted”?
Nicole: I made the decision to change the name from Just Braids by Nicole to Get Twysted because the name — Just Braids by Nicole — boxed me in as a braider when in fact I offered a wide variety of natural hair services. I realized that when an individual is looking for a braider, the name says it all. They may not thoroughly read through the service menu to find another natural service. Locs are my specialty along with natural twysts, thus the name change which seems appropriate.
Latoya: What is the main problem or concern women come to the salon with?
Nicole: The main concern is styling regimen. Just finding a style to fit them.
Latoya: What kind of solutions do you normally give. I know it is unique to each client, but are there any general solutions you normally give to your clients?
Nicole: My solution is finding a regimen that suits you and your lifestyle. Your day-to day.
Latoya: What are your favorite products to use on your customers’ hair?
Nicole: I make my own products based upon the texture of your hair. So I may put some coconut oil, grapeseed oil… just some different blends of natural oils for my clients. So they are unique to each client, but I’m a fan of SheaMoisture.
Latoya: What is the name of your product line and what are the main ingredients?
Nicole: The name of my product line is Organic Cures and Get Twysted Butters and Spritzers. The main ingredients are aloe vera, shea butter, mango butter, olive oil and nettles.
Latoya: I love aloe vera! That helped me a lot with moisture since I have low porosity. What advice to you have, as a stylist, to those wanting to go natural?
Nicole: Just be patient. Find a stylist that understands you and can help guide you. And just listen [to your hair]. There’s no magic pill.
