Textured Beauty: Kayla

Name:  My name is Kayla, but online  I’m known as CurleyChaos.

Tell us about yourself:  I am a 23 year-old Carlow Alum from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I work for the nonprofit organization, Amachi Pittsburgh. I love food. I love desserts. I love sleeping.  My only hobby… crocheting

How long have you been natural? Why did you go natural? This question becomes increasingly difficult to answer as time goes on. The only exact date I have is May 22, 2011 which was my Big Chop, but I had been transitioning for several months before my BC.  During this time, going natural was actually not my plan. I was just seeing how long I could go without a relaxer.  I was straightening my natural hair with a flat iron the entire time I was transitioning.

Ultimately, I went natural for 3 main reasons:

•    My close friend, Starr, had just BC’d and I liked her new look and admired her boldness.
•    It was becoming extremely hard to wash and comb my hair. There was a tough section of hair right where my natural new growth ended and my relaxed ends began.
•     I just wanted to know what my natural texture truly looked like.

What is your hair type and texture?  I am not even sure of my hair type; my guess is that I may be a 4c.  My texture is slightly more kinky than curly.

What products and techniques work best for your hair type/texture? Now, I’m no Natural Hair Guru, so I just use what works for me.

•    Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner Cream(moisturizing)
•    Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (soft feel & great smell)
•    VO5 & Organix conditioners (for co-washes)
•    Hello Hydration Conditioner & Shampoo
•    Olive Oil

As for techniques:

I love a simple twist out! I reserve wash & go’s for the summer.  Every once in a while I try an updo.   I’ve never done a braid out and very seldom do I wear bantu knot outs.  I have tried and the results are never as gorgeous as those YouTube tutorials I watch.  I always reference YouTube and take tips from the naturalistas that have been doing this much longer than I have.  Flexi rods & Perm rods are good.  I just ordered Magic Leverag Spiral Curlers (similar to Curlformers) on Ebay.  I hope they work!

What is your hair regimen and how does it fit into your busy schedule?  I’m at work at 8 a.m.  so I don’t have a lot of time to style my hair in the morning; I do my prep work at night.  Twist outs are my go-to.  I use the pineapple method to preserve my curls. If it somehow looks too messy in the morning, I fix it by pulling my hair back into a bun or up into an Afro puff.

Any additional advice?  LOVE your natural hair regardless of your texture!  Use satin while you sleep, and don’t become a product junkie.  Find a core group of products and stick with them.
