Hair’s Name: Well, I refer to my hair as “The Beast” whenever I’m about to wash/style it… lol! It’s time to tackle the BEAST… lol!
Tell us about yourself. I’m an IT Specialist (Civilian) for the Navy and Marines supporting Government software applications. I love spending time with my extra large family lol! I’m a hugh movie buff! I spend a lot of time reading African American Novels. (I’m a sucker for happy endings.) I love fashion so I shop A LOT… from modern to vintage! I love donating to charities and volunteering. Oh, and I’m a huge fan of neo-soul music and football!
Why did you go natural? I had over 6 months of new growth when I BC’d. It wasn’t my intention at first! I started a healthy hair journey during my relaxed days and with that came stretching my relaxers and protective styling. I went from getting a relaxer every 6-8 weeks to getting one ever 4-5 months! I stretched my relaxers for over a year which allowed me to get a glimpse of my natural texture…That’s when I began to fall head over heels in love with my natural hair! I planned to transition for a whole year but that ended after 6 months…my hair is extremely thick and coily and managing the two textures was becoming an all day task soooo… I Big Chopped :0) I kept a little bang in the front of my head for about 3 days and called it my ‘sanity piece’ !
What is your hair type and texture? Ummmhhhh… it a combination of 4s (kinky/coily) primarily…a hand full of 3s (curly)…a few 2s (wavy)…and a verryyyy small amount of 1s (straight) that stick out throughout my head…ugh, aggravating little rascals… lol!
What products and techniques work best for your hair type/texture? I’m always trying new products but when I want my styles perfect I use my staples which are, eco-styler gel, castor oil with a few drops of rosemary and peppermint oil (GREAT for follicle stimulation), Micheal O’ Rourke Fit it up Intensive Leave In, and Murray’s Hair Pomade. (I know…its petroleum, but its locks in moisture for my extremely thick hair like nobody’s business and I only have to use it once!!!) I’m a firm believer in finding what works best for your hair and sticking to it! As for techniques, I only detangle my hair once a week on well moisturized hair (usually water mixed with a leave in) using a tangle teaser from ends to roots…my hair is wayyyy to0 thick to finger detangle! I wear my faux bun as a protective style and to help retain length at least 2 weeks every month; Its GORGEOUS! When I do a blowout, I always use low heat settings and a heat protectant –it takes longer but there’s no risk of heat damage. For wash and go’s, I mix eco styler gel with an oil and a leave-in conditioner…(all leave-ins aren’t compatible with eco styler gel though, learned that the hard way lol!). I pull the mixture through my hair until the curls pop! When doing a twistout, I always leave about a 1/2 in at the ends to coil, makes a huge difference! I haven’t straightened my hair yet but I plan to for my 1 year Nappiversary, January 21, 1013!!!
What is your hair regimen and how does it fit into your busy schedule? My work schedule is fixed so I was able to schedule in time for my hair easily. I deep condition weekly (usually Fridays or Sundays), depending on how my hair feels, I may overnight DC. I HAVE to sit under the dryer for at least 30 minutes for my hair to feel like its been conditioned…I don’t know why (maybe my porosity level), but the product just sits on top of my hair if I don’t sit under the dryer to open up my hair shafts for penetration.
Any additional advice? Make sure that you’re 100% ready if your thinking about going natural and be prepared for people’s reaction. DO NOT Big Chop if you aren’t ready; transition as long as you want to. Accept your hair for what it is. Everyone’s hair is not the same and the sooner you learn to embrace what you have…the better off you’ll be! Be patient with your hair and KNOW that you’re BEAUTIFUL no matter what you decide to do with your hair!
