msvaughn2MsVaughn is a YouTube sensation.   And it’s no surprise why!  Not only does she provide natural hair styling and maintenance advice, but she also has impeccable style, polished videos, and a warm personality.   Recently, Black Hair Media was able to catch up with her.

Tell us a little about yourself and your natural hair journey.

My name is Vaughn aka MsVaughnTV and I’m a Chicago-based Natural Hair and Beauty Vlogger on YouTube.  I’ve been natural for almost 5 years post relaxer.   I went natural by way of the “big chop” in 2008 and wore my hair short and blonde for 2 years.   Immediately following my blonde phase I decided to grow out my color by gradually trimming it off until it was all gone (This took 1.7 years which resulted in shoulder length, color-free hair).   At that point I chose to embark on a “healthier” hair journey and began to retain length on purpose by making a conscious effort to select better products for my hair and by challenging my hair-care techniques.

What are your favorite products?

My hair texture is very curly and prone to dryness so I love using creamy, thick products which provide my hair with long-lasting moisture.   As a Vlogger I’ve had the opportunity to try dozens of brands for natural hair and love so many of them.   If I had to name only a few, I’d select Entwine’s Creme Jelle Styler, Creme of Nature’s Argan Oil Shampoo and 7-in-1 Miracle Leave-In Conditioner, Kurlee Belle’s Banana Nut & Avocado Deep Conditioning Treatment, Eden Bodywork’s Peppermint Tea Tree All Natural Hair Milk and Eco Styler Gel.

What is your natural hair regimen?

I am on a “Weekly Regimen” meaning that I wash/condition/style my hair once a week.   I believe that natural hair can be extremely low-maintenance and accommodate any lifestyle but much thought and consideration needs to be put toward creating a regimen that fits.  Your regimen is your personal routine and should be effortless and fuss-free based on YOUR lifestyle.   For my regimen I focus on cleansing my scalp on the weekends followed by conditioning and a very easy twisting or braiding of the hair.   For the next 5 days following the take down, I focus on low manipulation styles throughout the week and I do not re-comb my hair.   It’s very easy for me.

msvaughn4Tell us a little about your YouTube channel? Why did you start your channel? What is your mission?

My YouTube channel focuses on all aspects of Brown Beauty from Hair, to Makeup, to Fashion and even a little bit of Lifestyle.   Most of my videos are structured tutorials that are relatively polished containing visuals and voice-overs which comprehensively explain the styling process step by step.   But I also have very casual, laid back videos that are similar to “girl talk” sessions about products that I love.  I film, produce and upload my own videos.   I started my YouTube channel in the Fall of 2010 because I wanted to spread enthusiasm about my natural hair and fashion explorations and to inspire girls to feel comfy going natural.   It was really that simple and has grown from there.

Recently you launched StyleQueue.  Tell us a little more about your online shop.

StyleQueue.com is an affordable online boutique for women created, ran and operated by myself and my sister/Vlogger partner, MeechyMonroe and a small team.  We offer everything from accessories, fashion items, beauty products and even a virtual thriftstore. We are essentially fashion buyers and only offer items that reflect our personal styles.   StyleQueue is a tangible bi-product of our YouTube channels.   Our viewers have asked for this.

What is next for MsVaughn?

There is so much more to come from me because I’m passionate about what I’m sharing and I am essentially building a brand.   There are, of course, MANY more collaborations on the horizon so our viewers can look forward to plenty of opportunities to meet/network with us at fab events in a city near you.   Most notably my sister and I are going to be hosting our very first Style Queue meetup here in Chicago this Spring as well as our 2nd Annual Industry Standard Natural Hair and Beauty Fashion Show this September.   We’re also looking forward to some huge projects at the end of the year and into 2014.    We can’t wait to share more deets!

Anything else you would like to add? Any advice for naturals?

For all the new naturals out there, or those aspiring to be, it’s going to be very important to have patience with your hair.  Decide initially whether you will be embarking on a length journey or otherwise.   This will help you set meaningful goals for your hair as well as manage your expectations.   Take advantage of your resources as most of them are free (or inexpensive).   I want you to know that it’s not only OK but completely rational to seek visual inspiration as you “get to know” your hair all over again.   Go ahead and obsess over it.   It’s yours.

Honestly, I never heard of her but I will look her up. The advice she gave to naturals was
    genuine and on point.

I have been watching MsVaughn’s YT channel for long time. I love how down to earth she is and her sense of style. She inspired me to do the BC in January. I see many more great things in her future.
