Tell us about yourself: I am enrolled at Delaware Technical and Community College as a General Business Major. I just completed my first year as a contestant in the Miss Delaware Pageant under the Miss America Organization and placed as first runner-up. I love to dance and right now my goal is to be Miss Delaware 2013 and compete in Miss America 2014. I am currently raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network. My personal platform is “Empowering One Another,” having the youth of this generation understand the importance of being an individual. Working to improve the low-self esteems in teens by teaching about acceptance and awareness for the things you say and do to others. Empowering one another is our responsibility.
How long have you been natural? Why did you go natural? 1 1/2 years. I went natural because my older sister Jessica was very persuasive and I was fed up with my hair. It was short and boring and I wanted to change my entire look. I was in my senior year when I did my big chop and I got a lot of opinions from people when I decided to cut all my hair off.
What is your hair type and texture? I don’t really know my hair type, I guess its 4a- 4c. [ Looks at chart, lol] My hair gets very dry fast but it wont suck up a lot of moisture, so I cannot just dump on a bunch of product because it will just sit on my hair. So, I usually have to keep up on moisture a lot.
What products and techniques work best for your hair type/texture? I am a twist out girl, that is mostly all I do. I’m getting into flat twists some and I like it a lot. I use Shea Moisture Curling Enhancing Smoothie, shea butter, and coconut oil. I don’t like a lot of products because its just not necessary. I use Giovanni Direct Leave-in. I also use their deep conditioner and Garnier shampoo. It smells good!
What is your hair regimen and how does it fit into your busy schedule? My hair regimen is very lazy; I am a lazy natural. I will condition my hair when it gets way to nappy, and keep mini twists in when I have a very busy week. I usually have to put in my protective style in the beginning of the week or my hair will be in twist outs and high puffs all week. My hair is something special but I love it, so it works out.
Any additional advice? Be strong. People are going to have a lot to say about your hair, and how you should and should not wear it. Some will say hurtful things and some will be encouraging. Through your natural hair journey have faith in yourself. Keep yourself educated and love your hair throughout all the stages. Short or long…you are still beautiful.
