Name: Jennifer Henry
Tell us about yourself: I am a 32 year old dedicated mother to a beautiful young lady. I work as a trust administrative officer for a private firm during the day and work my own administrative support company on nights & weekends. Volunteering is a passion of mine so I’m active in my daughter’s school district and in my local church. As a family, we also have volunteer events throughout the year to give back to our community both locally and in my hometown of Neptune, NJ. I LOVE to run and workout. I joined a women’s running group (Black Girls Run) last year and ran my first half marathon! This year, my goal is to complete ten races including two half marathons! My friends are important to me and I love on them as much as I can.
How long have you been natural? Why did you go natural? I have been natural for about five years now. For years, I was curious about my natural hair but never really knew how to take care of it. I was lead to the big chop after I needed to re-evaluate how much money I was spending on perms. I started to notice my hair was getting dull and lifeless. I started to worry that I was allowing some serious damage to my hair so I needed to change. I really didn’t embrace my curls at first, but now I absolutely love my natural curls and I’m grateful for what I have. My biggest motivation to staying natural is my desire to be an athlete.
What is your hair type and texture? I know I’m a 3C but I’m not sure of the type of texture I have. It’s thick, but pretty manageable.
What products and techniques work best for your hair type/texture? Like many naturalistas, I’ve tried so many different products. My hair can be on the dry side naturally and even more now due to working out. Currently, I’ve been addicted to Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus products – mainly the Restorative Conditioner, Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Curl & Style Milk, and Miss Jessie’s ® Pillow Soft Curls. Staples in the hair arsenal for me are virgin coconut oil (Trader Joe’s), natural shea butter and Eco Styl olive oil based styling gel.
What is your hair regimen and how does it fit into your busy schedule? My schedule can be very hectic, but I finally have it down to a science. Due to the moisture issues I have, I only do a full wash every two to three weeks with Miss Jessie’s Crème de la Curl shampoo & SheaMoisture conditioner. For daily styling, I make sure I use a silky bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase. In the morning, I mist a little water and use very little coconut oil and styling milk to ‘wake up’ the curls. I co-wash every three days with the SM curl enhancing smoothie to start and finish the co-wash with the SM conditioner. After each co-wash, I make large twists and to elongate the curls apply a little shea butter, coconut oil and Pillow Soft Curls to each section. Air drying works best for me.
Any additional advice? The best advice I can offer to every woman is to wholeheartedly embrace what God gave you. All natural hair is beautiful. Take the time to learn what works best for you. Have fun with it, but take care of your hair. Most importantly, take care of you!
